Yarra Glen - in the heart of the Yarra Valley
Under an hour’s drive from Melbourne and in the heart of the Yarra Valley, Yarra Glen is famous for its wine, fresh food and breathtaking scenery.
The place where Victorian winegrowing started, the Yarra Valley is home to over 55 wineries, most with cellar door tastings and sales. Many are as serious about food as they are about wine, matching the wine they make with local produce in restaurants located in beautiful vineyards.
The Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges region is home to some of Victoria's most impressive tall forests. Follow the many walks and trails through stands of towering 100 metre high mountain ash, undulating seas of tree ferns, across clear gushing streams and past thundering waterfalls. And for those not keen to leave the comfort of their car, some of the best scenery is accessible by road too. For the more adventurous, a trip to one of the region’s National Parks could mean coming face-to-face with Australian wildlife. Wombats, swamp wallabies, possums, lyrebirds, platypus or deer can all be spotted on a guided spotlight forest walk near Warburton, Healesville or around Marysville.
For a unique view of the Valley and an experience not to forget, try hot air ballooning at dawn. Gently float over the countryside as the sun rises up over the mountains.
Nestled in the foothills of the Yarra Ranges, Healesville Sanctuary offers an opportunity to get close to over 200 species of Australian wildlife, including platypus, koalas, emus, Tasmanian devils, lyrebirds, wombats and eagles.
Set in a natural bush setting of 30 hectares, the sanctuary features large walk-through flight aviaries and special habitat and nocturnal exhibits. Wander through the Flooded Forest Aviary and see the Helmeted Honeyeater – Victoria’s bird emblem and an endangered species – or visit the nocturnal creek habitat at the Sidney Myer World of the Platypus for a glimpse of one of our most captivating animals. Daily ‘Meet the Keeper’ and ‘Birds of Prey’ presentations are an ideal way to learn from the experts who care for the animals.
Where better to retreat after a fun filled day than at one of the Yarra Valley’s boutique B&Bs, self contained cottages or luxury five star hotels.
